1. Which of the following is NOT a function of bone?
     a. Provides structural support for entire body
     b. Serves as levers that can change the magnitude and direction of forces generated by skeletal muscles
     c. Protects organs and tissues
     d. Serves as a storage location for glycogen

Answer: The bones of the skeletal system perform five functions: They provide structural support for the entire body, serve as levers that can change the magnitude and direction of forces generated by skeletal muscles, protect organs and tissues, provide storage (calcium salts of bone serve as mineral reservoirs for maintaining concentrations of calcium and phosphate ions in body fluids, and fat cells in yellow bone marrow store lipids as energy reserve), and produce red blood cells and other elements within the bone marrow. Glycogen is stored in the muscle and liver.

2. Which of the following exercise modes allows buoyancy to reduce the potential for musculoskeletal injury and even allow an injured person an opportunity to exercise without further injury?
     a. Cycling
     b. Walking
     c. Skiing
     d. Water exercise

Answer: Water exercise has gained in popularity because the buoyancy properties of water help to reduce the potential for musculoskeletal injury and may even allow an injured person an opportunity to exercise without further injury. A variety of activities may be offered in a water exercise class. Walking, jogging, and dance activity all may be adapted for water. Water exercise classes should typically combine the benefits of the buoyancy properties of water with the restrictive properties. In this regard, both an aerobic stimulus may be provided as well as activity to enhance muscular strength and endurance.

3. Which of the following is NOT a category for classifying types or methods of learning?
     a. Auditory
     b. Tactile
     c. Verbal
     d. Visual

Answer: Individuals can perceive, organize and process information in one or more of the following ways: visual, tactile (kinesthetic), and auditory. Visual learners obtain information primarily through the written word (they tend to be readers), and benefit from handouts. Tactile (kinesthetic) learners obtain information by practicing a skill or behavior and benefit from demonstrations. Auditory learners obtain information best by listening, and benefit from discussions and question/answer opportunities

4. What does the term “risk stratification” refer to?
     a. Ability of the client to take airplane rides
     b. Ability of the client to perform high-intensity exercise
     c. Identification of latent or overt coronary artery disease
     d. Identification of diseases that place the client into certain categories

Answer: The purpose of risk stratification is to identify high-risk individuals (persons with contraindications leading to potential exclusion from testing or exercise; individuals with disease symptoms or risk factors that require medical evaluation prior to testing or exercise; individuals with clinically significant disease that requires medical supervision during testing or exercise; or individuals with special testing or exercise needs) and to select the appropriate activities for those persons. Risk categories include apparently healthy, increased risk, and known disease.

5. Uncoordinated gait, headache, dizziness, vomiting and elevated body temperature are signs and symptoms of what condition?
     a. Hypothermia
     b. Acute altitude sickness
     c. Acute exposure to the cold
     d. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke

Answer: Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are serious conditions that result from a combination of the metabolic heat generated from exercise accompanied by dehydration and electrolyte loss from sweating. Signs and symptoms include uncoordinated gait, headache, dizziness, vomiting, and elevated body temperature. If these conditions are present, exercise must be stopped. Attempts to rehydrate, perhaps intravenously, should be attempted and the body must be cooled by any means possible. The person should be placed in the supine position, with the feet elevated.

Okay well there you have it, a little snippet of what I've been working on. Don't fall asleep on me already. I know it's dry. Oh Lord do I know it's dry. Those are the first 5 questions from the sample ACSM exam I took. Oh, I didn't just take the practice test, no, I then typed out each and every question and answer on a separate document so I can print it out and use it to study from. 100 questions! 4 options each! 1 paragraph answer for each! It made about 30 pages worth of study material. And I think I have carpal tunnel now.

Now don't get all disappointed in me for just doing a simple cut and paste for my TT post. I just finished A LOT of work doing all that. And in doing it, I also got to go through each and every question multiple times. I learned some good stuff. But, because I've been so busy taking the practice test, then copying it, retaking it twice because I closed the window by accident and copying it again and again, I'm just sick and freakin' tired of staring at the computer and typing. Don't forget either that I work in front of my computer all day every day too. Spreadsheet fun is what I get paid for. I just need to make this quick and get up and away from the computer before my brain turns to complete mush. Ugh. Need a vacation! :)

Wow, there's no copy and paste function? Maybe it would even be easier to take a bunch of screen captures? Retyping it will definitely help you remember it, but when there's that much to retype... first off I don't know how much you'd retain anyway, and second, like you said, carpal tunnel. I know what you mean about the computer, though. Four out of five times, if I don't post for a while, it's because I'm sick of the computer.

I hope you start getting a little more interested in it as you go, though. It'll definitely make it easier for you to study and retain if/when that happens! (Unless the perceived disinterest is just because you're sick of the computer, in which case I hope you find a way to spend less time on the computer and more time studying. :D)
