My Polar

I just learned something new today. I pulled out my Polar heart rate monitor owner's manual and read through it again. I learned that my little watch/hrm has remembered every exercise session I've had since I bought it and strapped myself up. I looked up the totals and here's what it gave me:

1/12/2009   Date it started tracking
765             Hours of total exercise fun since then
49,566        Calories burned since then (not sure if this is correct though, it only allows so many digits)
194             Number of exercise sessions since then
3                 Average number of workouts per week since then

Isn't that amazing? I'm amazed. I've had the damn thing for over a year and had no idea it did that. Sneaky little bugger. Well, being the little number cruncher that I am, I just had to further investigate these claims made by my favorite little red buddy.

58              Number of weeks since HRM started tracking
13.2           Average hours per week of exercise fun since the start
3.8             Average hours per workout session since then
65              Average calories burned per hour (pretty sure this is not correct since I typically burn 8-12/min)

Now, it all sounds pretty darn good if you ask me. But, I do have one little question mark floating about up here in my head. That is in the 3.8 hours/workout on average I supposedly did 3 times/week. I barely hit 2 hours per workout so for it to say that I average almost 4 hours seems just a big wacky to me. I don't know what could be causing this little issue but I believe it is mistaken. It's probably more like 2hrs/session and 5-6 sessions/week. But whatever. Such a small thing. No big deal.

You know what this tells me? Oh lots of things of course. But there is one in particular I'm refering to. This little gadget shows a relatively consistent pattern of exercise over the past year of my life. That's pretty freakin' exciting.

I love my Polar.

I've always wondered if those things were worth the money... I thought they just tracked your heart rate. Interesting that they actually have that much information! I agree that is a little strange that it mixed up your hours per day and days per week. Maybe you had a stage where you weren't working out so much, so that brought down your average days per week, but when you DO work out it's for a decent amount of time, which is why it's weird. (Does that make sense to anyone else?) Like you said, though, you've consistently been working at it for a year, which is definitely awesome. Keep it up!

I definitely recommend getting one. It has been so great. I use it when I'm outside playing tennis or when I go roller skating or hiking or play racquetball, etc. So it's much easier to consistently track my calories with whatever exercise activity I am doing. Mine is an older model and is no longer available. It's also a less expensive one. There are others that do all kinds of crazy things.
